CITY OF SAN ANTONIO
GOVERNMENT & PUBLIC AFFAIRS DEPARTMENT
MEMORANDUM

TO: Intergovernmental Relations Council Committee

FROM: Jeff Coyle, Director of Government & Public Affairs

SUBJECT: National League of Cities - City Summit

DATE: October 5, 2018

On October 10, the Intergovernmental Relations Council Committee will receive a briefing on the upcoming National League of Cities (NLC) 2018 City Summit and preparations for the 2019 Summit to take place in San Antonio.

The 2018 City Summit will take place November 7-10, 2018 in Los Angeles, CA. The City Summit is a national conference for local leaders and provides an extensive variety of workshops and training seminars for elected officials and employees of municipal governments from across the United States. GPA will provide an overview to the Committee on key events and activities at the City Summit, including opportunities to learn about local government best practices in areas such as equity, community engagement and economic development, as well as opportunities to engage in NLC driven advocacy efforts.

Next year, San Antonio will host the NLC City Summit, scheduled for November 20-23, 2019 in the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center. This is an opportunity for the City of San Antonio to showcase innovations and successful programs to approximately 4,000 attendees representing cities across the country. As the host city, the City of San Antonio will be responsible for a number of hosting responsibilities, such as organizing a series of "mobile workshops" for conference attendees to tour successful projects and sites throughout the community, planning of various events and providing volunteers to help ensure the event runs smoothly.

The San Antonio Host Committee will be comprised of City staff to carry out the planning and implementation of host committee responsibilities. As part of the effort, subcommittees will be formed and responsible for specific areas determined by the host committee.
