COUNCIL DISTRICTS IMPACTED: Council District 1

SUBJECT:

Disposition of surplus property: San Antonio Fire Station #1 located at 801 East Houston Street

SUMMARY:

A resolution authorizing a request for City Council to declare as surplus and to sell or convey City-owned property described as Lot S, Block 54, and New City Block 553, known as 801 East Houston Street.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

Under Municipal Code, all city property must be declared as surplus prior to the disposition by sale or conveyance of the property. The request to declare property as surplus must be submitted to the Transportation and Capital Improvements, Real Estate Division, then the request and exhibits are sent to departments and municipal utilities that provide services to, or construct infrastructure on the property. The departments and municipal utilities respond if there is a need for property or if the property may be disposed.

The City of San Antonio purchased this property and built San Antonio Fire Department Station 1 in February 1939. The fire station remained in operation until 2011 when the City built a new Station 1. The City leased the property to the San Antonio Fire Department Museum Society in 2012. Although the City still owns the property, the Museum Society has made improvements and maintained the facility for over 6 years at the Museum Society's expense.
