Briefing of Process to Fill At-Large Appointments to the Planning Commission (6 Slots)
SUMMARY:
Six (6) At-Large Slots are available on the Planning Commission. In response to the high number of applications received; Mayor Nirenberg has formed an Ad Hoc Subcommittee to review applications and forward their recommendation of nine (9) applicants for interview by the Governance City Council Committee. The Planning Commission Subcommittee consists of Councilmembers Gonzales, Saldaña, Viagran, and Sandoval. Said committee will meet on Tuesday, October 23, 2018 to filter through all applications and recommend nine (9) for interview.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
A press release and social media outlets were utilized to advertise the open slots. My office received over 60 applications. Mayor Nirenberg formed the Ad Hoc Subcommittee to address same. My office will facilitate and staff the Subcommittee Meeting and their selection of the nine applicants.
Each Governance City Council Committee Member will be permitted (but not required) to add one applicant to the list of nine (9) interviewees.
ISSUE:
Planning Commission Appointments require full City Council approval.
FISCAL IMPACT:
There is no fiscal impact.
RECOMMENDATION:
The City Clerk recommends proceeding with the Ad Hoc Subcommittee Meeting. Prior to the November Governance Council Committee Meeting, each Governance City Council Committee Member will be asked if they have any other applicants to add to the nine (9) recommended applicants. Interviews of selected applicants will be held at the November Governance City Council Committee Meeting. The recommended and nominated applicants for appointment will be placed on the Regular City Council Meeting of November 29, 2018.
