Consideration of At-Large Appointments to the Planning Commission (6 Slots)
SUMMARY:
On October 12, 2018, Mayor Ron Nirenberg created the Planning Commission Subcommittee to include: Shirley Gonzales, Chair, Comprehensive Plan Council Committee; Rey Saldaña, Chair, Transportation Council Committee; Rebecca J. Viagran, Chair, Economic and Workforce Development Council Committee; and Ana E. Sandoval, Chair, Community Health and Equity Council Committee. On October 23, 2018, the Planning Commission Subcommittee convened to review and consider applicants for interviews. The Subcommittee and Governance City Council Committee selected twelve (12) applicants to interview to fill six (6) available slots. The following were selected for interviews:

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
Mayor Ron Nirenberg formed the Planning Commission Subcommittee to address the unprecedented high number of Planning Commission applications received by the Office of the City Clerk. He asked the City Clerk to staff the Subcommittee and facilitate the selection process. The Subcommittee terminated upon submission of the ten (10) applications selected and forwarded to the Governance City Council Committee.
Each Governance City Council Committee Member was permitted (but not required) to add one applicant to the selected slate. There are currently six (6) slots available. Five (5) slots with terms of office to expire October 6, 2020; and one (1) slot with a term of office to expire October 6, 2019 to fill the slot vacated by the resignation of Casey Whittington. Four (4) applicants are seeking reappointment and were selected by the Planning Commission Subcommittee for interviews.
ISSUE:
Board Appointments require full City Council approval.
FISCAL IMPACT:
There is no fiscal impact.
RECOMMENDATION:
The City Clerk recommends approval of the Governance City Council Committee’s selection and that finalized nominations be submitted for the City Council Meeting on November 29, 2018.
