Construction Contract for the Espada Trail Connection
SUMMARY:
This ordinance accepts the lowest qualified bid and awards a construction contract, including an additive alternate, to J. Sanchez Contracting and authorizes payment in the amount of $2,615,850.21 to perform construction work in connection with the Espada Trail Connection project located in Council District 3. Funding for this project is available from the Sales Tax Proposition 2 Linear Creekway Parks and included in the FY 2019 Capital Budget.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
This ordinance authorizes a construction contract with J. Sanchez Contracting for the Espada Trail Connection project. Design work was performed by Vickrey Associates, Inc. The Espada Trail Connection project consists of a new trailhead parking area and trail connection between the Medina River Greenway Trail System at Mission Del Lago Golf Course and the San Antonio River Trails System at Mission Espada. The trail connection will be 10 feet wide, 3.1 miles long with an additive alternate of .85 miles of trail, and built with concrete. The trailhead will include trailhead amenities such as signage, emergency call boxes, and minor landscaping.
The proposed project is part of a growing network of interconnected hike and bike trails now known as the Howard W. Peak Greenway Trails system, which is funded through sales tax initiatives approved by voters in 2000, 2005, 2010, and 2015. The objectives of the program are to acquire and preserve open space along San Antonio creekways and to develop multi-use hike and bike trails, trailheads, signage and associated amenities for use by San Antonio residents and visitors.
