SUBJECT:

 

Acknowledging the Resignation of William “Cruz” Shaw, District 2 Councilmember.

 

 

SUMMARY:

 

On Thursday, December 13, 2018, Councilmember William “Cruz” Shaw informed the Mayor and City Council that he was resigning effective January 7, 2019 creating a vacancy for City Council District 2.  This item will acknowledge the resignation and initiate procedures to select an interim replacement Councilmember.

 

 

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

 

The Office of the City Clerk will accept applications for the District 2 vacancy immediately following the City Council Special Meeting on Monday, December 17, 2018 through 5:00 pm on January 4, 2019.  Applications received will be made available to the Mayor and Council.  Applications, letters of interest, resumes, residency supplemental documentation, and Financial Disclosure Statements are public information upon filing with the Office of the City Clerk.  

 

On Wednesday, January 9, 2019, the City Council will convene in “B” Session to review the applications.  At the Regular Council Meeting to be held on Thursday, January 10, 2019, the City Council will vote to fill the Vacancy for the remainder of the unexpired term, expiring May 31, 2019. 

 

The District 2 vacancy is being filled in accordance with the provisions outlined in Section 8 of the City Charter, as there are fewer than 120 days left in the term of office.  The City Charter states that Councilmember vacancies shall be filled by a majority vote of the remaining members of Council for the remainder of the term, expiring May 31, 2019.  Procedures for filling the Vacancy are outlined in Ordinance 2010-05-06-0375. 

 

The Notice of Vacancy will be published in English and Spanish in the San Antonio Express News, on the website for the Office of the City Clerk, and on the City’s public access channel (TVSA).

 

 

ISSUE:

 

The resignation of District 2 Councilmember William “Cruz” Shaw will result in a vacancy on the City Council.

FISCAL IMPACT:

 

The Office of the City Clerk will advertise the Notice of Vacancy in the Express News in English and Spanish.

 

 

 

RECOMMENDATION:

 

Approval of the Ordinance.
