DEPARTMENT: Pre-K 4 SA

DEPARTMENT HEAD: Sarah Baray, Ph.D.

COUNCIL DISTRICTS IMPACTED: Citywide

SUBJECT:

2019-20 Academic Calendar

SUMMARY:

This includes approval of the Pre-K 4 SA 2019-20 academic calendar.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

Prior to the 2017-18 school year, the Pre-K 4 SA academic calendars aligned to the schedule most widely used by participating independent school districts. For the 2018-19 year, the Board approved a calendar that varied from the ISDs, included revised student holidays and an August “Welcome Week” for students.

ISSUE:

Pre-K 4 SA is proposing an academic calendar for the 2019-20 school year. School district calendars vary for this academic year and do not follow one specific schedule. Pre-K 4 SA reevaluated the calendar to revise student holidays and include a “Welcome Week” for students in August.

The new calendar satisfies the required number of minutes (75,600 annually) outlined by TEA. The school year will begin on Monday, August 19. The first day of school will follow a half-day “Welcome Week” which will allow students to be introduced and acclimated to the teacher/school/classroom through a smaller, more intentional approach. The school year will end on Friday, May 29.

ALTERNATIVES:

If the Board chooses not to approve, Pre-K 4 SA would revise the calendar.

FISCAL IMPACT:

There is no fiscal impact associated with this item.

RECOMMENDATION:

Staff recommends for the Board to approve the proposed 2019-20 academic year calendar.
