CITY OF SAN ANTONIO

GOVERNMENT & PUBLIC AFFAIRS DEPARTMENT

MEMORANDUM

TO:                                           Intergovernmental Relations Council Committee

FROM:                                           Megan Dodge, Assistant Director of Government & Public Affairs

SUBJECT:                      Update on National League of Cities - 2019 City Summit

DATE:                                          March 25, 2019

On March 28, 2019, the Intergovernmental Relations Council Committee will receive an update on preparations for the 2019 National League of Cities (NLC) City Summit to take place in San Antonio from November 20-23, 2019 at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center. As the Elected Official Welcoming Committee, the IGR Committee will serve as representatives on behalf of the City of San Antonio to the more than 4,000 conference attendees. During the planning process, the IGR Committee receives regular updates.

The NLC City Summit is an opportunity for the City of San Antonio to showcase innovations and successful programs to conference attendees representing cities and towns across the United States. As the host city, the City of San Antonio will be responsible for a number of hosting responsibilities, such as organizing a series of “mobile workshops” for conference attendees to tour successful projects and sites throughout the community, planning of various events and providing volunteers to help ensure the event runs smoothly.

Registration for the City Summit opened in early March 2019. A San Antonio Host Committee made up of 45 staff has been preparing for the Summit, in coordination with Visit San Antonio. The San Antonio Host Committee has been divided into subcommittees focused on specific projects: Entertainment & Hospitality; Mobile Workshops & Transportation; Special Events and Volunteers. The IGR Committee will receive an update on the Host Committee’s work, including mobile workshop opportunities, special event planning and other opportunities to showcase San Antonio at the Summit, such as entertainment.
