SUBJECT:

A briefing on the development of Metro Health's new strategic plan

SUMMARY:

The San Antonio Metropolitan Health District (Metro Health) will provide a presentation, briefing the City Council on progress made in the development of the department's new strategic plan, to begin in FY 2020.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

The San Antonio Metropolitan Health District's (Metro Health's) current department strategic plan will conclude at the end of FY 2019. In preparation for the department's new strategic plan, Metro Health conducted community surveying at all of the SA Speak Up budget meetings in the fall and administered an online questionnaire over several months, allowing the public and stakeholders the opportunity to provide input and identify health priorities for the community. Metro Health received over 4,000 responses to the community survey and utilized the feedback to identify the top 10 community health priorities. Next, staff convened an Ad-Hoc community group to narrow the list of the community's top 10 health priorities down to the top priority health indicators for San Antonio. These include: access to care; nutrition; adverse childhood experiences (ACEs); and violence. These new priority health indicators will form the basis for Metro Health's next 4-year strategic plan.

Furthermore, Metro Health identified three focus areas for each of the four priority health indicators and is in the process of gaining community feedback on action steps to take to address each focus area. On March 27, 2019, community members attended Metro Health's first listening session and provided feedback on how to translate the focus areas into actions. The department will share its plans to gain additional community member feedback over the next several months as staff work to finalize the new strategic plan.
