SUBJECT: Tour and Demonstration of Automated Vehicle Technologies at SwRI
SUMMARY:
The purpose of this item is to provide the Innovation and Technology Committee with an overview and demonstration of Automated Vehicle Technologies developed by SwRI.
BACKGROUND:
Southwest Research Institute® (SwRI®) is a leading provider of technologies for both commercial and military automated vehicles. Capabilities in research and development, as well as testing and standards, include:
• Localization solutions that allow automated vehicles to maintain their position on roadways.
• Precision following technologies enabling unmanned vehicles to react to traffic using visual and physical sensing data.
• Low-speed automated shuttles for use in campus settings, such as golf courses and amusement parks.
• Automated trailer spotting to help move freight at distribution centers and container terminals.
• A Connected Vehicle Affiliated Testbed supported by the USDOT’s Research and Innovative Technology Administration, to support public and private sector research, testing and demonstrations of innovative, next-generation intelligent transportation technologies.
ISSUE:
This tour provided by Mike Brown, Institute Engineer and Jerry Towler, Senior Research Engineer at SwRI will showcase the potential of Autonomous Vehicles (AV) as an emerging mobility technology.
