SUBJECT: City Council Project Funds Allocation (CCPF)
SUMMARY:
This ordinance awards grant allocations through the City Council Project Fund (CCPF) to support the San Antonio Sports Fit Family Challenge and The Magik Theatre: Tickets to Literacy Program. These programs provide free opportunities to families and children in San Antonio to participate in family-friendly community recreation and educational, artistic learning experiences.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
The City Council Office began administration of the City Council Project Fund in 2012. City Council approval is required for allocations exceeding $10,000 to an applicant for the same program, activity, events, good or service. This ordinance awards two grant allocations in the amount of $12,084.92 and $14,250.00 to support San Antonio Sport’s Fit Family Challenge Program and The Magik Theatre: Tickets to Literacy Program respectively.
San Antonio Sport’s Fit Family Challenge
The San Antonio Sports Fit Family Challenge aims to improve the health and wellness of San Antonio families through a free, 12-week summer family fitness program that encourages families to be active together and live a healthier lifestyle. 2019 marks the tenth year for this program.
Districts 9 and 10 held a joint event on June 29. San Antonio Sports hosted the District 9 and 10 Veteran’s 5k, a free family friendly event with approximately 2000 participants. In addition to the race, the event included a health fair, health screenings, and incentives and recognition for leading an active and healthy lifestyle. Funds awarded will reimburse the organization for program costs needed to fund these community events.
The Magik Theatre: Tickets to Literacy Program
The Tickets to Literacy Program provides free tickets to schools serving low-income children for family-friendly stage performances. The program runs from October 2018 through September 2019. To date this fiscal year, Magik Theatre has entertained and educated more than 60,000 pre-K and elementary school children at their home stage. Of those, more than 7,000 attended for free through the Tickets to Literacy program. For many of these students this is their first live theatre performance. This season, The Magik Theatre at Hemisfair has hosted 427 schools, with approximately 300 of them designated as Title 1. The Magik Theatre has also provided 223 Tours to Schools in San Antonio this season. Approval of these funds will assist in providing thousands of economically disadvantaged children access to an educational, cultural, and artistic experience. Additionally, expenditures on this item comply with CCPF guidelines regarding restrictions and limitation related to the Moratorium.
ISSUE:
This ordinance approves a grant allocation to support the San Antonio Sports Fit Family Challenge Program in an amount of $12,084.92 and approves a grant allocation to support The Magik Theatre: Tickets to Literacy in the amount of $14,250.00.
ALTERNATIVES:
City Council could choose not to approve these allocations.
FISCAL IMPACTS:
Funding for these allocations is included in the FY 2019 Adopted General Fund Budget for CCPF.
