The City Council Office began administration of the City Council Project Fund in 2012. City Council approval is required for allocations exceeding $10,000 to an applicant for the same program, activity, events, good or service. This ordinance awards two grant allocations in the amount of $16,742.49 and $16,891.11 to support San Antonio Sport's Fit Family Challenge Program for events in District 4 and District 8 respectively.
San Antonio Sports' Fit Family Challenge
The San Antonio Sports Fit Family Challenge aims to improve the health and wellness of San Antonio families through a free, 12-week summer family fitness program that encourages families to be active together and live a healthier lifestyle. 2019 marks the tenth year for this program.
In May and August 2019, San Antonio Sports coordinated two 5K races for Council Districts 4 and 8:
* District 4 Heroes 5K/10K on May 11, 2019
* District 8 Superhero 5K on August 10, 2019
These races were free family friendly events with the number of participants ranging from 2,000 to over 4,000 participants. In addition to the race, the events included a health fair, health screenings, and incentives and recognition for leading an active and healthy lifestyle. The District 4 Heroes 5K/10K also included fitness classes led by Mayor Ron Nirenberg as part of the "Get Strong with Mayor Ron" program. Funds awarded will reimburse the organization for program costs needed to fund these community events.
