SUBJECT:
The San Antonio Fire Department will be giving a presentation on the Fire Department’s Mobile Integrated Healthcare Program (MIH). This presentation will cover and describe all of the initiatives involved in the MIH program, as well as define the intended patient populations impacted.
SUMMARY:
The San Antonio Fire Department (SAFD) has established the Mobile Integrated Health Program which was initially designed to reduce the call volume from frequent EMS callers, by assisting and educating them to maintain their healthcare through conventional means. The program has blossomed to providing other patient populations with alternative care programs, in an effort to prevent the need of those patients to activate and utilize the emergency medical care system.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
On October 1, 2014, the San Antonio Fire Department began a six-month pilot Mobile Integrated Healthcare (MIH) Program which focused on patients with high volume use of the 911 system. The success of that pilot program lead to the permanent establishment of the program on May 1st, 2016 and was staffed with 1 Lieutenant and 7 Engineers with associated equipment.
In an effort to keep programs and initiatives consistent on a regional basis, the MIH Consortium was formed and includes personnel representing STRAC, Schertz, Canyon Lake, New Braunfels, SAFD, and other regional providers.
