SUBJECT:
Construction Contract Award for Perimeter Fence Project at the San Antonio International Airport
SUMMARY:
Council consideration for an ordinance to award a construction contract to D. Wilson Construction, the lowest responsive bidder, in an amount not to exceed $1,291,310.81 for the Airport Operations Area Perimeter Fence project at the San Antonio International Airport. This project will remove and replace more than 15,300 feet of six-foot fencing with new eight-foot fencing. The project is funded from Interim Airport Financing.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
The current perimeter fence around the San Antonio International Airport includes segments that have been damaged from flooding and vehicular accidents. In 2018, the Aviation Department issued a task order to RS&H, one of the department's on-call general engineering consultants, to assess the existing perimeter fence system for the Airport Operations Area (AOA). The assessment was to identify the current conditions of the fence and areas that are within or out of compliance of current security standards. The AOA fence refers to the perimeter fence that divides the public area with the secured area and does not include tenant-leased and other fencing. In 2019, RS&H recommended two areas that were within the available budget and are vulnerable to vehicular and animal intrusions.
The scope of this project will replace 15,355 feet of six-foot fencing in segments along Wetmore Road and Skyplace Blvd with new eight-foot fencing. This project includes the installation of additional buried mesh to deter wildlife onto the airfield. Any installed fencing that already meets the security requirements will be excluded from the project.
