SUBJECT:

Lease Agreement with San Antonio Tennis Association, Inc. at John McFarlin Tennis Center


SUMMARY:

This ordinance authorizes the Parks and Recreation Department to execute a Lease Agreement with the San Antonio Tennis Association, Inc. for office space and tennis courts at John McFarlin Tennis Center located in San Pedro Springs Park beginning May 1, 2020 and will expire on April 30, 2023 with two (2) one-year administrative extension periods.


BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

The San Antonio Tennis Association, Inc. (SATA) is a non-profit, volunteer-based community tennis organization affiliated with the United States Tennis Association (USTA) whose vision is to grow tennis in the greater San Antonio community. SATA's presence at John McFarlin Tennis Center dates back to the 1940's.

On May 1, 2015, SATA entered into a Lease Agreement for use of John McFarlin Tennis Center for the purpose of providing on-going tennis programs, tournaments and related recreational services to the community. The initial term of the Lease was for three years, with two (2) additional one-year administrative extension periods, the second of which will expire on April 30, 2020.

A new Lease Agreement is proposed to commence on May 1, 2020 and expire on April 30, 2023 with two (2) one-year administrative extension periods. SATA will continue to operate and provide tennis programs and tournaments at the leased premises. Additionally, SATA will be required to continue to offer free fitness programs on a weekly basis through the City's Fitness in the Park program. In lieu of rent, SATA will make a minimum investment of $9,000.00 in maintenance, repairs and/or improvements to John McFarlin Tennis Center during the initial term of the agreement.
