SUBJECT:

CivTechSA Residency Program

SUMMARY:

The purpose of this item is to provide the Innovation and Technology Committee with presentations of the solutions developed by RedSquared Consulting and Rubicon Global, in association with challenges presented by the Information Technology Services Department and Office of Innovation, and the Solid Waste Management Department through the CivTechSA Residency Program.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

The CivTechSA Residency Program is a 16-week program where the City invites companies to solve civic challenges in an effort to foster collaboration and growth. The selected residents work closely with the City, Geekdom, and CivTechSA throughout the duration of the program to develop a minimum viable product that addresses challenges posed by City departments. At the end of the Residency Program, companies have the opportunity to showcase the solutions they developed at Demo Day, a culmination event highlighting all of their efforts, wherein City departments have the option to purchase the solutions.

ISSUE:

Presentations made by representatives from RedSquared Consulting and Rubicon Global on the overview of the development process and exhibition of the solutions produced during the 2020 CivTechSA Residency program. RedSquared Consulting partnered with City departments and other public service providers to develop a One-City app where residents will be able to access city-related services on one platform. Rubicon Global developed a contamination detection tool to outfit Solid Waste recycling trucks that will identify when contaminants are dumped into recycling bins, all in an effort to improve sustainability measures within the city.
