SUBJECT:

 

A briefing and discussion on a Council Consideration Request from Councilmember Viagran on a Resolution to honor the life and legacy of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

 

 

SUMMARY:

 

On October 29, 2020, Councilmember Rebecca Viagran (District 3) filed a Council Consideration Request for the City Council to consider a Resolution honoring Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s 27-year tenure on the United States Supreme Court.

 

 

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

 

Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court, passed away on September 18, 2020 at the age of 87. Justice Ginsburg was the first Jewish woman and second woman appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court in 1993 after serving on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia since her appointment in 1980.  During her service on the U.S. Supreme Court, Justice Ginsberg was known as a champion for civil liberties, gender equality, and women’s rights. 

 

ISSUE:

 

City Council has honored other national figures in prior actions. 

 

 

ALTERNATIVES:

 

The Governance Committee could explore other avenues to honor Justice Ginsburg.

 

 

FISCAL IMPACT:

 

There is no fiscal impact associated with this item

 

 

RECOMMENDATION:

 

Staff recommends this matter be referred to full City Council for consideration.
