SUBJECT:                     State Legislative Update

 

DATE:                                           January 8, 2021

 

During the Intergovernmental Relations Committee meeting, Government & Public Affairs (GPA) will provide an update on the 87th Texas Legislative Session, which begins Tuesday, January 12th. Destined to be a session unlike any other, the update will include:

                     Recap of opening day of the Texas Senate and Texas House

 

                     Review of how the Legislature will operate during the pandemic

 

                     Summary of bills filed-to-date that are relevant to the City of San Antonio

 

                     Recap of recent activity regarding the City’s top priorities; police reform, public health, broadband, and local decision making

 

To date, the Senate and House have filed over 1,200 bills. During the first 60 days of session, or before March 12th, lawmakers are prohibited from passing any legislation, unless the Governor declares it an emergency item. Governor Abbott is expected to give his State of the State address in the next few weeks.
