BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
Project Background
In 2017, through Ordinance 2017-09-21-0678, City Council approved the reprogramming of funds in the amount of $800,000.00 from the 2012-2017 General Obligation Bond Program Presa Ramps project to the World Heritage Underpass Infrastructure Project in the City’s World Heritage area. Through the public input and design process for improvements for the World Heritage Underpass Infrastructure Project, residents and community members voiced the need for places to view the artwork, landscaping and improved pedestrian access such as wider sidewalks for those residents that require walking assistance. This project will provide for pedestrian improvements to include sidewalks, benches and landscaping such as the installation of native vegetation, hardscape and rock complements. Project construction is anticipated to begin in March 2021 and is estimated to be completed in August 2021.
Previous Council Action
In September 2020, the World Heritage Office was awarded a 2020 American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) Community Challenge Grant in the amount of $30,000.00 for the World Heritage Underpass Infrastructure Project. This grant will assist the City’s efforts to beautify the underpass along the World Heritage Trail, activate a new public space, and provide access to the Windows to Our Heritage public art installation. On September 3, 2020, City Council approved through Ordinance 2020-09-03-0600 to amend the City’s Capital Improvement Program Budget in the additional amount of $30,000.00 in AARP grant funds to the World Heritage Underpass infrastructure project for pedestrian improvements.
