Ordinances Canvassing the May 1, 2021 Election Results

 

 

SUMMARY:

 

This item will canvass the official election results of the May 1, 2021 General, Charter, and Special Elections. 

 

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

 

On Saturday, May 1, 2021, the City of San Antonio held a General, Charter, and Special Elections. 

 

A.                      On February 11, 2021 the City Council ordered a General Election for the purpose of electing ten members of the City Council, Place 1 through 10, and one member to be elected as Mayor, Place 11.  The City Charter requires candidates to win their respective place by a majority vote of qualified electors voting in that district.  The Run-off Election is scheduled for June 5, 2021.   

 

The ballot order for candidates involved in a Run-off Election will be the same as on the General Election ballot as required by Section 52.094(a) of the Texas Election Code.

 

B. On February 11, 2021, the City Council ordered a Charter Amendment Election for the voters to decide whether to amend Section 98 of the City Charter to expand the City’s authority to hold elections to authorize the issuance of bonds by the City for permanent public improvements or for any other public purpose, including affordable housing programs, not prohibited by law. 

 

The City Clerk will provide a Certified Copy of the Charter Amendment Election Results to the Secretary of State as required by state law.

 

C. On January 8, 2021, the City Clerk received a petition seeking an election for San Antonio voters to consider the repeal of collective bargaining rights for San Antonio Police Officers under Chapter 174 of the Texas Local Government Code. 

 

 

ISSUE:

 

The City Council as the canvassing authority will canvass the unofficial election results of the Saturday, May 1, 2021 Election.

 

 

ALTERNATIVES:

 

There are no alternatives as the City Council is required by law to canvass the election results.

 

FISCAL IMPACT:

 

This is no fiscal impact associated with the Canvassing of Election Results. 

 

 

RECOMMENDATION:

 

Staff recommends approval of these Ordinances.
