CITY OF SAN ANTONIO

GOVERNMENT & PUBLIC AFFAIRS DEPARTMENT

MEMORANDUM

TO:                                          Intergovernmental Relations Committee

FROM:                                          Jeff Coyle, Assistant City Manager

SUBJECT:                     School District Federal Relief Funding

DATE:                                           May 7, 2021

At the Intergovernmental Relations Committee meeting on May 12th, representatives from the San Antonio Independent School District, Northside Independent School District, North East Independent School District and the Bexar County Education Coalition will provide information on the State’s release of $11.2 billion of federal COVID relief funds to schools across Texas.

Background

On April 28th, Governor Abbott announced that the State would be releasing $11.2 billion to schools. The funds represent approximately two thirds of the total $17.9 billion available under the Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act (CRRSA) and the American Rescue Plan (ARP) passed by Congress. The funds are supplemental to all other funding sources and School Districts are to use the funding for pandemic response and to address student learning loss.

The Texas Education Agency is making the funds available through a grant process. The deadline to apply is May 23, 2021. Bexar County School Districts are eligible to receive nearly $500 million form the initial allocation announced by the State.
