SUMMARY:

The San Antonio Fire Department offers several training opportunities in both initial education and incumbent training through the Fire Training Academy. This presentation will give the Public Safety Committee a high-level view of the capabilities of the Fire Training Academy, as well as a look into the response capabilities and demographic make-up of the department.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

The current SAFD Fire Training Academy was constructed in 2006 and houses the SAFD Cadet Training Program and the SAFD Incumbent Training Program. This state-of-the-art facility is utilized to educate firefighters from across the region in the latest tactics and programs in the fire service. The Cadet Training Program educates newly hired employees to become Texas Commission on Fire Protection Structural Firefighters and Texas Department of State Health Services EMT-Basics.

The San Antonio Fire Department has developed several community outreach programs to attract applicants to the Fire Academy. As an “All Hazards” department, the SAFD has a wide variety of resources and capabilities to respond to any emergency the City may experience. Innovation in the industry has been a key component to the department’s success, by increasing efficiency and access to emergency resources.
