Fiber Deployment Update
SUMMARY:
The Public Works Department will provide a briefing to the City Council Innovation and Technology Committee on the status of the fiber deployment occurring in San Antonio. This briefing will include an update on fiber deployment and accomplishments to date.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
On August 5, 2015 Google Fiber announced that they would officially build a fiber-to-the-home network in San Antonio. On September 21, 2015, AT&T began to expand their fiber network and announced that their new high-speed services would be available to select locations. In April of 2016, Google started construction on their one-gigabit network. In September of 2016, at the request of Google, a micro trench pilot project located in Council District 6, was approved by City Council.
On December 14, 2017, the Transportation Committee approved the continued, city-wide, use of micro trenching. Since 2018, several other agencies have also deployed fiber networks within San Antonio. These agencies continue to construct their infrastructure networks in San Antonio.
Public Works staff will provide a briefing on the status of fiber deployment across the city.
