City of San Antonio’s Adaptive Signal Control Pilot Update
SUMMARY:
The purpose of this item is to provide the Innovation and Technology Committee with an update on the pilot project to deploy Adaptive Traffic Signal Controls at seven locations in the Medical Center Innovation Zone.
BACKGROUND:
The City of San Antonio currently operates Adaptive Traffic Signal systems on La Cantera Pkwy. between Fiesta Texas and The Rim (District 8). In December 2020, a pilot project was announced to the Innovation and Technology Committee that would install an Adaptive Traffic Signal system at seven signalized intersections in the Medical Center Innovation Zone located in City Council District 8 to solve for identified traffic issues.
Congestion as one of the Top 3 challenges faced by residents within our three Innovation Zones, and specifically within our Medical Center Innovation Zone. The City of San Antonio Office of Innovation’s Smart Cities team conducted a survey in late 2018 which identified Traffic technology to solve for challenges faced by residents across our city. The Innovation Zones have been established as testbeds for this new technology prior to their deployment citywide.
ISSUE:
The Public Works Department will provide a briefing to the City Council Innovation and Technology Committee to provide an update on the City of San Antonio’s Adaptive Traffic Signal Pilot Project in the Medical Center Innovation Zone.
