Resolution honoring the life and legacy of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
SUMMARY:
This item will approve a Resolution honoring Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s 27-year tenure on the United States Supreme Court.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court, passed away on September 18, 2020 at the age of 87. Justice Ginsburg was the first Jewish woman and second woman appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court in 1993 after serving on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia since her appointment in 1980. During her 27-year tenure on the U.S. Supreme Court, Justice Ginsburg was known as a champion for civil liberties, gender equality, and women’s rights and health.
ISSUE:
City Council has honored other national figures in prior actions.
ALTERNATIVES:
City Council could find other ways to honor the late Justice Ginsburg or could choose to not honor her.

There is no fiscal impact associated with this item
RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends City Council approve a Resolution honoring Justice Ginsburg as a champion for civil liberties, gender equality, and women’s rights.
