Task Order for Woodlawn Lake Area Tree Installation
SUMMARY:
This ordinance authorizes a task order to a Job Order Contract for a tree installation initiative in the Woodlawn Lake area, including the Woodlawn Lake, Jefferson and Monticello Park neighborhoods located in Council District 7, in an amount not to exceed $250,000.00 payable to Sabinal Group. This ordinance also appropriates funds from the FY 2019 Tree Canopy Preservation and Mitigation Fund.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
A series of destructive storms with heavy winds blew through San Antonio in June 2019. These storms impacted several areas, including that around Woodlawn Lake Park in Council District 7. This area is known to have a declining tree canopy and many of these trees were severely damaged beyond repair. In addition, past studies have shown this area has a lower than average tree canopy coverage city-wide. In an effort to restore and increase lost tree canopy, the Parks and Recreation Department will be using Tree Canopy Preservation and Mitigation Funds to plant new trees on both public and private properties around Woodlawn Lake Park.
As part of this initiative, recovery trees will be provided to residents who live within the footprint of the Woodlawn Lake, Jefferson and Monticello Park neighborhoods near Woodlawn Lake Park. This area represents approximately 4,000 residential homes, which the proposed tree enhancements for the target-area include the installation of large caliper native shade and ornamental trees of various designated species. Outreach for this tree canopy restoration project is anticipated to begin in Fall 2019 and estimated for completion by Fall 2020 to coincide with ideal planting seasons and accommodate residential schedules.
