A briefing on the Status of Women in San Antonio
SUMMARY:
A briefing on the Status of Women Report commissioned by the City of San Antonio
BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
In Fall 2018, the City of San Antonio commissioned a report on the status of women, in order to establish the status of women in San Antonio and reaffirm the commitment of the City to improve the status of women.
In 2018, the City of San Antonio unanimously approved a resolution on Women’s Equity, reaffirming the commitment of the City to improve the status of women, specifically in the four following manners: 1) by eliminating all forms of violence against women, 2) by promoting the health and safety of women, 3) by promoting substantive economic and business opportunities for women, and 4) by promoting political participation and leadership by women.
The full comprehensive report was prepared by Dr. Rogelio Saenz and Lily Casura from UTSA, and utilized a variety of data sources to provide a detailed account of the standing of women with respect to health, education, work, housing, civic engagement, and violence, among others.
This full report was further used in order to prepare a more concise, brief infographic-based report that provides an overview on the status of women, highlighting key areas. Specifically, the brief report provides data, statistics, and key facts on the status of women according to four overarching categories: i. Health and Well-being, ii. Economic Opportunities, iii, Political Participation, and iv. Violence and Safety.
These reports were provided publicly at https://www.sanantonio.gov/Health/News/Reports on May 8, 2019.
The reports and a presentation on the Status of Women were also presented on May 8, 2019 to the Mayor’s Commission on the Status of Women.
The City plans to use the information compiled from the report to inform the development of policies and programs focused on improving the status of San Antonio women.
The City will also be doing future analyses and reports on the Status of Women in San Antonio annually from hereon - released every February, to coincide with International Women’s Day.
